2020 Canvasback Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon Longwinds Vineyard
With ideal soils and a dry desert climate, Red Mountain produces some of the most compelling and distinctive red wines in the New World. Situated near the top of Red Mountain at an elevation of 1,100 feet, our Longwinds Estate Vineyard features an ideal southwest exposure, gently rolling hillsides, and thin, sandy loam soils. Offering a graceful and dynamic expression of Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, this block and barrel selection of our finest estate fruit is poised and polished, with lovely floral aromatics, supple fine-grained tannins and lush red fruit flavors of raspberry, cherry and wild strawberry.
Bright and bursting with red fruit, this generous wine offers enticing aromas of ripe strawberry, plum and grenadine, with hints of dusty sage and brown spice. On the palate it is supple and alluring, with fine, elegant tannins and a fleshy mouthfeel adding drama to flavors of black cherry and compote, with notes of graham cracker and cinnamon emerging on the long, satisfying finish.
A cold, dry winter on Red Mountain was followed by an equally cool spring, which led to a slightly later-than-normal budbreak and bloom. Following mid-June rains that significantly reduced the size of the crop, the weather turned hot in July and August, and we began picking our Syrah, Merlot and Malbec the first week of September. While the outbreak of wildfires in Oregon was a concern, after travelling more than 200 miles to Red Mountain, the impact of the smoke was minimal, and we were careful to exclude any impacted grapes. Instead, the driving characteristic of the vintage was the low yields, which despite the cool weather allowed the grapes to get beautifully ripe, producing wines with dark colors, plush creamy textures and rich, vibrant flavors.
